Pretty much worse case scenario

As is obvious to most by now the site is inaccessible, however, the bot server appears to be working. This means it is not just an internet problem, but a potential issue with the server having shut down. If this is the case I doubt there is anything I can do for now.

  1. Is the botserver connected to the internet separately? I thought the server acted as the router as well.

  2. I was having trouble accessing it this morning, but there was a little while where I actually did manage to get through. I wonder why.

  3. See? Watchdog timer, yo. It's what's for dinner.

  4. Trent,
perhaps you could create a couple of more blogs to keep people amused such as a rationalwiki.saloonbar and rationalwiki.wigo.cp where people could still chat. Alternatively everyone can come over to Answers in Genghis at http://www.genghis-khant.blogspot.com/ and post whatever they like

  5. So how long are we looking at then? Some days?

If you want to spend time on a wiki you could have a look at mine at

    http://teflpedia.com

But I don't have any goats.

  6. Well, long as we're sharing links, my blog is at http://kelseighn.blogspot.com

Dunno how much there is there that interests you folks, but there's probably something.

  7. Have you no trusted friends sill at uni? No colleagues still at uni? no Janitor at uni? no house ghost at uni? no intelligent cat at uni? No-one who can do anything on a phone line?
You do realise that we're all going to suffer withdrawal symptoms pretty soon?

  8. I dislike CP and what it's done to me. I will relish this downtime and accomplish a slew of things on my to-do list that refreshing recent changes on RW has kept me from. Oh whatever. Who am I kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  9. So I take it we pretty much have to find alternate amusement for the next two weeks or so?

  10. Look what it's done to me: I've been rude to Philip, accusing him of using "Goddidit" and he's threatened/promised to block me if I don't mend my (heathen) ways

  12. @ Human: we could invade Bob's wiki: possibly use a couple of pages there & copy them to RW when it's back & Bob could delete it there. If that's OK with Bob of course. BTW - my edit was "scurrilous": very 19th century!

  13. I've got no problem with your using a couple of pages on the wiki. It looks like everybody has taken August as a holiday anwyay.

As it happens I'm going to be away for a couple of days so I'll not be around to hand out tea and biscuits though.

  14. I had a strange feeling this was going to happen when Trent posted the message about going on vacation.

I didn't think it would occur immediately though.

  15. Looks like we're heading over to Bob's place then!

Why, did you do something "interesting" earlier today on the wiki?

  21. DSM-IV criteria for dependence, applied to wikis (instead of drugs; think "addiction"):

A maladaptive pattern of [wiki] use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by three (or more) of the following, occurring at any time in the same 12-month period:

    1. tolerance, as defined by either of the following:

    a. a need for markedly increased amounts of [wiki editing] to achieve ... the desired effect

    b. markedly diminished effect with continued [wiki editing]

    2. withdrawal, as manifested by either of the following:

    a. the characteristic withdrawal syndrome ...

    b. the same (or a closely related) [wiki] is [edited] to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms

    3. the [wiki] is often [edited] in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended

    4. there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control [editing]

    5. a great deal of time is spent in activities to [access the internet to edit], or recover from [the wiki's] effects

    6. important social, occupational or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of [wiki editing]

    7. the substance use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the [wiki]...

  22. Don't forget there's always wikisynergy.com, too.

  23. I was playing with my monobook.js at the time the server was playing up. I also started to have trouble with Nortons, but getting the hotfix for the toolbar seems to have fixed that. I also have tried commenting here about 4 times and my post don't seem to go through. This doesn't look like it is going to be my day.

  24. Since when trent went out for ~2 weeks again?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just the other day. It is pretty much off-line for two week, unless something remarkable happens.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good, now I have time to resume my plans for GALACTIC DOMINATION!!!!111!11!one111!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wait, I just had an idea. Isn't RationalBeta hosted by Nx for testing purposes, and we could use that? Or, by a stroke of luck, is the old site somehow hosted on a different server? I'm starting to get desperate here!!!!! (yes, 5 !'s)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ace and Rad are most upset. We have had to drink non-stop for 48 hours and aren't sure if we can keep up this pace for another two weeks. But we'll try.

    ReplyDelete
  29. WTF! Now how am I going to get off? Guess I'll have to go back to paying hookers to choke me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. don't troll -.-

sad to hear the server is down, hope it gets back up sometime soon. Thanks for your work Trent.

  31. Can anyone edit the "topic" from "worse" to "worst", it's driving me crazy....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Susan/Toast/Theresa,

I reduced PJR's insane one-month block of you to three days, in case you want to get yourself blocked again at aSS.

Meanwhile - everyone - come play at wikisynergy.com! The woo gets so deep you'll need waders.... but purplescissors is a benevolent host, at least.

  33. I sent Mr. T an email about possibly shoving the last nightly backup on to one of my servers for the duration of the outage but haven't heard back. Don't know if he doesn't have access to an internet connection where ever he is or what. I guess y'all are stuck with it for the time being.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mr. T = Trent? We're all calling him that from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Human:
Yes, I saw it thanks, but if I edit there I'll get myself blocked in seconds. The man's mad. Why does he let you run riot like you do?
Come play with US @ http://teflpedia.com : there's a dozen or so of us & we've got mobocracy, WIGOs, Student lounge, vandals (User:Aschlafly) and everything

  36. It appears that your Rat website is down. Perhaps this is a portion of God's vengeance due to your insistence on the atheist paradigm! I encourage you to take a look at our Barack Obama article on Conservapedia, which has been greatly expanded! Harder, Faster, Deeper!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I see your atheist sacred cow is still being skewered by the creationist crusaders on the beaches of Normandy. Perhaps your paradigm will soon be roadkill. Ole! Ole! Ole!

  38. Proxima Centauri dropped by my wikipedia user page to remind us that we are always welcome over at Liberapedia.

    ReplyDelete
  39. And I've rekindled my friendship with my first ever wiki back there. I also added Liberapedia to Bob M's contact points

    http://teflpedia.com/index.php?title=RW_contact_points

on teflpedia. As a sysop there, I welcome you all to take your shoes off before you enter.

  40. It really suck that we can't paste into these boxes.

Toasty said something like "why does he let you run rampant like you do?" (on aSS).

I dunno, sexism perhaps? I have done/said far worse than you, and all I get is reverted/chided.

You got blocked for a fricking month! (which, somehow, I was able to reduce to 3 days).

    Strange days, indeed.

  41. Liberalism/homo-ism is a mental disorder but y'all knew that already!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shucks, I should go backup all these potentially lumenotable wikis, before they die. Click my name "Lumenos" for a backup process that anyone can do in a minute or two, on a small MediaWiki wiki.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey, thanks for all the hard work, Trent.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Theresa:

Don't worry, Theresa. Quitting the addiction is surprisingly easy.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ RA: not that easy - you're still obviously lurking.

@ David Gerard: It's not Mediawiki, it's hardware - unattended server gone down & not reachable for another week plus.

    @ anonymous: we'll be back.

    ReplyDelete
  46. :P Not really. I really only keep tabs on RationalWikiWiki, which is the only reason I found out that the server was down (RWW went down with RW).

    ReplyDelete
  47. just like ratwiki, liberalism is on the decline

    ReplyDelete
  48. So what's up (or down) with rational-wiki? Just technical problems or gone for good?????

    ReplyDelete
  49. My guess most likely a MySQL connection error. We are looking at the 6th or 7th to be back on line.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ PI: Thanks for the info ;)
